Environmental Terrorism [2014]

Environmental Terrorism: Mother Nature Never Forgets [2014]

Mediums: Graphite, Tempera, Watercolor

Description: This piece is my protest against societal apathy towards global warming. It draws a contrast to our panic of terrorism, by recalling the iconic photo of the falling man during the 9/11 attacks. While we began a war on terrorism, global warming is not even unanimously accepted. In the piece, rather than a corporate man jumping from a burning building, I show a polar bear jumping from a "melting" iceberg. This is an attempt to convey my strong belief that global warming is a much bigger threat to my generation than terrorism.

The True Superheroes [2014]

Mediums: Watercolor, Acrylic, Fabric

Description: This piece is an homage to my heroes. Inspired by the styles of Warhol and Lichtenstein, I painted over black-and-white photos of Marie Curie, Isaac Newton, Galileo Galilei, Charles Darwin, Thomas Edison, Alan Turing, and Albert Einstein. The comic-book, polka-dot effect is used to emphasize that I see them as superheroes. This contrasts with the use of 3D fabric on their collars, which reminds us that they are real people. Rather than saving fake worlds, they changed the world we live in.

Medium: Photography (edited)

Description: This photo was taken at a resort in Arizona with a GoPro. I was fascinated by the fact that the refraction of light on the water makes it impossible to see the body, creating an interesting illusion. Note that the person in the picture is a large man and I did not photoshop the body out of the picture. Furthermore, the vivid colors and serenity of the scene make it one of my favorite photographs.

Ribeira do Porto [2013]

Mediums: Marker, India Ink, Watercolor

Description: I created this piece for the final project of my Drawing and Design course. I was inspired by modern Hong Kong artist Marc Allante. However, the piece has great meaning to me because it depicts buildings from the iconic neighborhood of Ribeira in Porto, my parents and extended family's hometown.The piece captures the melancholy of the Ribeira neighborhood and makes an indirect reference to "fado." This is the traditional musical genre of Portugal, characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics. The buildings cry red, yellow, and green, the colors of the Portuguese flag. The piece is 24x30in.

Description: When I was a freshman, the arts department at my school participated in the Vans Custom Culture Contest. The school was sent four pairs of shoes by Vans, each to be painted according to a different theme. My design was selected for the sports theme, so I got the opportunity to customize a pair of Vans Authentic. It was a very unique medium to work with.
